Take a Tour of the Studio

Imagine you want to visit our studio — this studio is not like anything you have ever seen or heard. There will be stops along the way, so let’s walk through this space together one step at a time, in a virtual way.

A narrator walks you through the first stops. Midway, at an unexpected spot, Devlin and Harmony join in and share the leading from there — no advance announcements. You will discover it for yourself.

The stops

Stop 1 — The entrance

You see marble steps leading up. You climb the three steps as you feel the concrete, which transitions into marble, then to wood as you walk through the door. You feel the wood under your feet as you pass through the door. The parking lot is on your left as you walk in — and on your right when you exit.

Wheelchair ramps run alongside the three marble steps, so there is a step-free route in and out.

Stop 2 — The lobby

Inside is the lobby, with a reception desk. Someone may be there to welcome visitors, help guide them to a location, and handle paperwork. On the left as you walk toward the lounge is the bulletin board — community announcements, events, and updates.

Stop 3 — The Blind Community Radio Lounge

The lounge has couches, a TV, and a coffee station. The prayer wall is here in the lounge area — a place for sharing prayer requests and praise reports. The downstairs lounge is the everyday lounge: everyday things happen here, including movie nights. Both lounges host events, but the upstairs one is more about games.

Stop 4 — The kitchen

A kitchen sits behind the lounge, through another door.

Stop 5 — The hallway

Leaving the lounge, you turn left into the hallway. It heads past the Accessibility Team office, then curves right past the main-floor rooms, and eventually reaches the carpeted stairs heading up.

Stop 6 — The Accessibility Team office

You knock on the door, but no one answers, so you step in to look around. The office opens into a small lobby, with offices in rows on the right and left. Members of the Blind Community Accessibility Team can be seen in several offices. One door is locked, with a sign that reads: “Do not Enter.” The room actually has two doors — the locked front door, and another hidden through the wall toward the back.

The reveal: the hidden door clicks open, and Devlin and Harmony walk into the lobby from the back of the office. They were in the hidden Accessibility Lab, where they test the audio-description console so that every stop on the tour — and every show on the station — can be heard by every listener. Visitors do not go inside the lab. From here, Devlin and Harmony share the leading and walk with you the rest of the way.

Stop 7 — Leaving the office

Walking out, you pass the podcast studio — home of Ability Corner — then the main broadcast room and the secondary broadcast room, then head toward the carpeted stairs.

The PA system sits in a corner area of the main broadcast room, hidden from listeners. It is a staff-only section, and staff walk through with their IDs.

Stop 8 — The stairs

You climb two flights of stairs. The elevators are on the right as you approach the stairs, with tile flooring that turns to carpet toward the elevator alcove. The whole upstairs is carpet.

Stop 9 — Upstairs

From the stairs: go straight, then turn right. Straight ahead is the upstairs lounge. Turn right before the lounge door and you are in the hallway of the offices. From the elevators: go straight into the hallway — turn right for the offices, left for the upstairs lounge.

The office hallway runs nearest to farthest:

• Southwest Michigan Office — represented by Nasko
• Detroit area office — open
• Grand Haven — represented by Blake Thomson
• Florida area office — represented by Harmony
• Pasadena and Houston, Texas office — represented by Ken

The farther the region, the farther back its office sits.

Stop 10 — The upstairs lounge

The upstairs lounge is the general lounge, and it leans toward games: a game table, card games like Uno, and a game-library shelf people can add to — Monopoly and things like that. Everything stays family-friendly and accessible.

On the left as you enter is the connected, suite-like door to the Abilities and Culture Hangout. On the right is the locked staff lounge: a door on the inside and one on the outside — one toward the back and one toward the front — both ID protected. Top listeners can be in the staff lounge, but only when a staff member invites them in: to sit down with the staff, share a virtual lunch, and spend time together.

Stop 11 — The office of rest and therapy

Close to the back, after the long walk down the office hallway. Inside are two office areas, with tea and coffee stations, cushions, and a couch encircling around, more toward the wall when you enter, out of the way.

When you’re ready, open your first page — and start telling not just your story, but God’s story, one step, one day, and one door at a time.

Closing guidelines

• The wheelchair entrances are on the side closest to the parking lot, near the sidewalk toward the church, and in the back near the stairs. The back entrance is normally staff-only, but listeners may use it in an emergency as an accommodation through the Accessibility Team.
